Digital Literacy Program - Northstar

This classroom program works on building computer skills, software skills, and using technology in everyday life. We have worked hard for our outreach efforts in Little Havana and Midtown, and are incredibly thrilled of our achievements.

There is a great need for digital navigation and literacy assistance in Little Havana. Lacking access to technology can have major implications for healthcare. Telehealth appointments have become more popular since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.  decisions.

Through this project, Healthy Little Havana Community Liaisons identify and report the most prominent issues that the Little Havana community is facing in relation to digital literacy. Based on these reports, HLH will organize workshops for residents. Currently, the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) offers digital literacy courses throughout many of their libraries in the county in Spanish and English. These include both online and in-person workshops with sessions on “Introduction to Computers - The Internet,” and “eDevice Advice,” “Basic Computer Skills,” among others. However, there does not appear to be any courses offered at the Hispanic Branch in Little Havana, which would be most accessible to HLH’s target population.

Healthy Little Havana hosts weekly workshops in the community on digital literacy and navigation in the nearby schools: SLAM Academy, Riverside Elementary, and Centro Mater Academy. The workshops are focused on the primordial aspects of technology in order to close the digital literacy gap in Little Havana.
