Sara Santilla - House Cleaner 52 from Peru

Hello, my name is Sara. I am Peruvian and I have 2 children who are 13 and 12 years old. I work cleaning houses. There is a house that I go 2 times a week and getting to that house is a martyrdom for me. They always have the thermostat at 80 or 79 degrees and I get desperate. I feel that my head will explode through my eyes, so I wet my head and place my face in water and for a bit better, and when I go outside to clean, it gets worse.

Once I turned on the fan from the ceiling, and the owners caught me.  They prefer to have the televisions on rather than to lower the air. After spending all that time in the indoor heat cleaning, I have to take the bus and walk home and cook - there is no rest.

I worked in one home where I had to sweep the leaves off the tree – a tree on the street.  I tried but the sun is strong and your clothes stick to your body; you sweat a lot. No matter how much you wear clothes that protect you, they can still cause you to get rashes on your arms and it burns.

Once I had to clean the balcony windows and the sun was very strong. I got weak and I had to finish the work.  I rested for a while, then when I started again, steam came out of the windows when I poured water on them.  The day felt so long.  When I came home, the floor was as if I was walking through the fire, and you can’t sleep at night. 

Hola, me llamo Sara. Soy peruano y tengo 2 hijos de 13 y 12 años. Trabajo limpiando casas. Hay una casa a la que voy dos veces por semana y llegar a esa casa es un martirio para mí. Siempre tienen el termostato a 80 o 79 grados y me desespero. Siento que la cabeza me explota por los ojos, así que me mojo la cabeza y la cara con agua y mejoro un poco, y cuando salgo a limpiar, empeora.

Una vez encendí el ventilador del techo y los dueños me pillaron. Prefieren tener los televisores encendidos antes que bajar el aire. Después de pasar todo ese tiempo limpiando con calefacción, tengo que coger el autobús, andar a casa y cocinar; no hay descanso.

Trabajé en una casa donde tenía que barrer las hojas del árbol – un árbol en la calle. Lo intenté, pero el sol es fuerte y la ropa se pega a tu cuerpo. Sudas mucho, por mucho que lleves ropa que te proteja, aún pueden causar erupciones en los brazos y quemazones.

Una vez tuve que limpiar las ventanas del balcón y el sol estaba muy fuerte. Me debilité y tuve que terminar el trabajo. Descansé un rato, y cuando volví a empezar salió vapor por las ventanas al echar agua encima. El día se sintió tan largo. Cuando volví a casa, el suelo era como si estuviera caminando por el fuego y no podía dormir por la noche.
